Candace loves music! Piano was her first love and she took lessons from a young age up through high school. During her years of piano lessons, she completed the Achievement in Music Program which focuses on music theory, technique, performing, and ear training. She also competed in Piano Federation, scoring straight superior ratings for all nine years on her solos and duets. As a classically trained pianist, she loves the music of Rachmaninoff, Chopin, Debussy, and Bach.
Candace recently graduated from BYU in Music Education and hopes to be a band teacher. She plays the oboe and has performed with the BYU Wind Symphony, Symphonic Band, and Symphony Orchestra. She was also a member of the BYU Cougar Marching Band on the trumpet, which was an amazing experience. Her studies at BYU have trained her to pay close attention to the phrasing, style, and interpretation of the music.
Candace loves teaching students of all ages, from beginning to advanced. When working with young students who have never played before, she likes to start by teaching them easy songs by ear and then transposing them to different keys. Scales are also taught right from the start in order to build a solid foundation of technique. Note reading is crucial as well, so it is incorporated into the lessons after a few weeks. This approach helps the students develop their aural skills and be more well-rounded musicians.
Candace also likes to integrate composing into the curriculum. Even beginners can create simple character pieces and it helps them explore the piano more. She has composed and arranged her own piano pieces and she loves accessing her artistic side to make awesome music.
Candace loves helping her students excel in their playing abilities while integrating music theory, history, and aural skills naturally into the lessons. Her passion and excitement for music will help you accomplish your musical goals and increase your love of music too!
