Derek is an accomplished violin teacher beginner to advanced levels since 2022. His teaching career is backed by a rich performance history, including roles with the Lyceum Philharmonic, Giving Bach Performing Arts Organization, Utah Valley Youth Symphony, University of Utah Philharmonic, and multiple Utah State Orchestras. Derek has earned notable accolades such as the Salt Lake Symphony Concerto Competition Winner, Utah Valley Symphony Concerto Competition Winner, and Lyceum Philharmonic Concerto Competition Winner, among others. He also received the Forum Music Festivals Outstanding Musicianship Award and full music scholarships to both the University of Utah and Utah Valley University.
Derek’s teaching approach is personalized, focusing on tailoring violin techniques and explanations to fit each student’s unique needs and learning style. He avoids a one-size-fits-all mentality, instead breaking down advanced techniques and solo repertoire into manageable insights using analogies, light-hearted explanations, and real-world experiences.
