Cello | South Jordan

Derek has been teaching Cello for 5+ months and has been playing the cello for the past 9 and a half years. He started learning the instrument back in 8th grade in 2012 and is currently in the last semester of his Cello Performance degree at the University of Utah. Ever since he was a beginner he was a bit shy about learning the instrument and was even a little timid when he would perform by himself. He got good ratings from state Solo and Ensemble Festivals, but didn’t really come into his own until he finally was in the middle of his college career and truly fell in love with classical music. He makes a great member of any ensemble and also loves to perform solo should the opportunity come! He especially loves performing chamber music and seeks out any opportunity to perform in quartets, trios, etc. He recently attended the Emerald Chamber Coast Music Festival in Niceville, Florida where he spent two weeks with a Piano Quintet and also performed in masterclasses where he received advice and instruction from professional cellists around the country. He also performed in the Red Rock Music Festival in Phoenix, Arizona where he attended their winter chamber institute and spent a week working on and eventually performing with a quartet. Overall, Derek loves being immersed in the music community in whatever way he can. Whether that be teaching, traveling and attending events, going to concerts, or even just spending alone time practicing, Derek loves the community and loves connecting with and engaging with others in the community as well as welcoming people who are interested. He’s open to teaching anybody and sharing his love of classical music and will absolutely guide you on your own musical journey in whatever way he can.

“Music in itself is healing. It’s an explosive expression of humanity. It’s something we are all touched by. No matter what culture we’re from, everyone loves music.”
- Billy Joel
