Joy

Viola, Violin | Sandy

Joy Gil is a passionate violinist from South Korea with a lifelong dedication to music. She began playing piano at the age of four and started studying violin at twelve. She also studied viola for two years in college and graduated from Art Music High School in Korea with a focus on violin performance.

Joy has earned multiple accolades for her musicianship, including winning the 17th annual BCMS Young Artist String Quartet Competition and the BYUI String Section Concerto Competition in 2022. She has performed with renowned artists such as Jenny Oaks Baker in Idaho Falls (2022) and William Hegan (2023). In 2023, Joy was honored with the Eliza R. Snow Exemplary Students Certification and was selected to perform as the Music Department representative at BYUI’s 2024 graduation ceremony. She also received a full scholarship to attend BYUI from 2021 to 2024.

Joy’s teaching philosophy centers around the belief that beautiful sound begins with strong foundational technique. She emphasizes tone production and expressive playing, encouraging her students to play with both skill and heart. For Joy, music is a universal language that transcends borders and connects people with one another—and with something greater.

She hopes her students not only learn to play the violin but also experience the joy and depth of sharing emotion through music.

“Music in itself is healing. It’s an explosive expression of humanity. It’s something we are all touched by. No matter what culture we’re from, everyone loves music.”
- Billy Joel
