Kathleen

Piano, Ukulele, Voice, Piano Place Jr's | St George

Kathleen has a Bachelor’s degree in music education (choral/vocal emphasis) from California State University, and a Master’s degree in Vocal Performance from the University of Southern California. She is Level 3 certified in the Orff Schulwerk Method, and has been teaching music in schools and privately for over 37 years. To say Kathleen is passionate about teaching would be an understatement! She believes in playful learning, whether in a group setting or in individual lessons. “Playful” to her means creative, thoughtful, energetic learning, free of pressure or stress, and full of the joy of discovery. She has extensive experience in helping students take their first steps in general music and in singing/playing piano, but is also very interested in helping adults begin or continue their musical journey. She believes that she is a co- learner. She has complete respect for what each student can discover, understand, and create while learning music. Her motto is “But wait…. There’s more!” She integrates the unexpected, as appropriate to the age and interest of each child: a puppet, a poem, a ball, a glockenspiel, a recorder, an iPad game, or a challenge to improvise and create. She likes to jump away from the printed page sometimes and encourage her students to find a way to “make it their own.”

“Music in itself is healing. It’s an explosive expression of humanity. It’s something we are all touched by. No matter what culture we’re from, everyone loves music.”
- Billy Joel
