Lehi Music Lessons for Seniors: Exercise, Memory and Stroke Recovery

In part one of this two-part blog series, we went over some basics on why many seniors and older adults benefit greatly from music lessons. Learning an instrument is a fantastic pursuit for people of all ages, but those at an advanced age may find particular benefits from it, including in the cognitive realm and several others.

At The Piano Place, we're proud to offer lessons in numerous instruments to clients in Lehi and many other parts of Utah, from guitar lessons to piano lessons, drum lessons, voice lessons and more -- and we provide them to people of all ages, from kids up to seniors. What are some other ways older adults may benefit from any of our music programs? Here are a few to consider, whether you're such an individual or a family member looking to help enrich the life of a loved one.

A Form of Physical Exercise

We talked about music lessons as "brain exercise" in part one of our series, but this is not the limit of their benefits! Playing an instrument is also a form of physical exercise, and one that can be enjoyed for many years. As we age, it becomes increasingly important to stay active in order to maintain our health, and playing music is a great way to do just that.

While a 20-year-old might not get much exercise from playing an instrument, many older adults find that it's a great way to work their muscles and stay healthy. For seniors, in particular, this can be very important.

Tool to Fight Memory Loss

Memory loss is a harmful condition that can affect seniors in a few ways, but music is among several strategies that have been shown to help mitigate its effects. Playing music can help keep our brains active and engaged, improving our cognitive function and helping to ward off memory loss.

If you're an older adult looking for a way to fight memory loss, consider signing up for music lessons! They may just offer the boost you need.

Stroke Recovery

In addition, learning an instrument is shown to help improve things like balance and strength -- even just listening to music on its own can have some of these benefits, as well. And because people recovering from a recent stroke often have difficulty regaining movement in their upper extremities, music lessons can be a great way to help them get back on their feet.

At The Piano Place, we love to see our students make progress in their recoveries, and we're proud to offer music lessons as one strategy that can help achieve this.
