The Building Blocks of Better Piano Practice

You’ve started taking piano lessons and you’re excited about developing your budding musical talent.

But, before you can sit down at the piano and begin practicing, there are a few things that must happen. If you can add a few of these fundamentals to your piano practice sessions, then you can get more out of the time you devote to it.

Ultimately, the simple steps will lead to more productive piano lessons as you work to master your skills. Here are a few tips to help you get started!

Get Plenty of Sleep

Just as with almost everything else you do in life, getting enough sleep will have a positive impact on your piano practice. If you are tired and find you don’t get enough sleep at night, then you’re more prone to be less productive and have less energy too.

Plan Your Piano Practice Sessions

One of the most important things you can do in your pursuit of piano play is to plan it out. Have a rough idea of what you want to accomplish for the day and then stick to that plan. That gives your actions purpose throughout the day, too – which will help you feel more productive in more than the piano!

Create Goals for Your Piano Lessons & Practice

Your music teacher can help you to create goals for your piano lessons, but you need to have goals when it comes to practice as well. When it comes to piano playing goals, it’s important to plot them out and consider if they are realistic, if you feel inspired by them, and if you feel they're flexible enough to make minor changes along the way.

Remember, it’s important to be consistent and disciplined in piano, but it’s also important to be adaptable. You’re only human, after all!

Expect the Unexpected When Learning to Play

Life is anything but predictable and sometimes things will get in the way of your plans and your piano practice. That is OK!

When you think about your goals and work out a rough sketch for your day and your plans to practice, make sure to work in time for the unexpected. You may run into traffic on the way home, have a long line to wait in at the grocery store, or get a phone call from an old friend you weren’t expecting. Don’t overcommit yourself – you’ll have time to practice piano eventually because you’ve made a plan!

Keep Track of Time

You may think you need 30 minutes to practice but end up spending close to an hour every time you play before you’re satisfied. Pay attention to how much time your practice is actually taking versus what you expect it to take and you’ll be able to plan more efficiently.
